Peace and Social Action Committee Meeting Minutes of 11 October 2009
Present: John and Jane Thomas, Martha Dickinson. Stephanie, Judith, Julie, Susan, and Mary Alice were unable to attend.
We went over some of our current activities:
1. Leela is working with Mary Alice to prepare a VeteranŐs Day service in November.
2. We are co-sponsoring Cecilia St. King, a Peace Troubador, in her concert at UUCE tonight. Martha will open up and close up.
3. Rethink Afghanistan, a film, will be shown next Sunday, October 18 at 7pm, sponsored by PASA. See rethinkafghanistan.org for more information. You are encouraged to sign up there for our Ellsworth screening. Matt Baya suggested this showing and will provide the technology. Martha ordered the dvd and will play host.
4. Everybody
Eats is going well and everyone is encouraged to stop by for a meal and/or to
help cook, set up, serve or clean up.
See http://everybodyeats4free.blogspot.com/
for more. A presentation was made
recently to the Ellsworth Area Ministers Association and it is hoped that more
churches, groups and individuals will get involved.
5. The UUSC program, Guest at Your Table will be kicked off Nov 22. Martha will send Leela materials so she may select a story. Martha and anyone else who volunteers will go into RE classes that day to help get it going. Margery Forbes is also helping with Guest at Your Table.
At our last meeting, we had talked about asking Rob Shetterly to speak about one of his favorite causes that is also on our agenda -- Mountain Top Removal Mining. We will talk more about this and about the possibility of having a program with Rob and Voices for Peace similar to a program done with the Friends Quarterly Meeting last year.
John suggested we talk about George LakoffŐs ideas about methodology and framing as written in his book, DonŐt Think Of an Elephant. Martha has a copy, has read it, and will loan it to John and others who may want it. You may also find it at a library. We may discuss this at our next meeting, which will be the 2nd Sunday morning in November at 9 am. We will try to make 2nd Sunday mornings our usual time, so please add it to your calendar.
Next meeting: Sunday, November 8, 9 am, UUCE RE wing.
Respectfully submitted,
Martha Dickinson
